Island Sanctuary

Island Sanctuary was originally released as part of the Alpha and Beta sets for Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as an enchantment that grants a player protection from attacks while preventing them from drawing cards. The specific version known as Summer Magic, or Edgar, was a limited production run intended to correct printing errors found in the earlier Revised Edition. Because a significant portion of this print run was destroyed due to quality control issues, these cards have become some of the rarest and most sought-after artifacts in the game's history.

The artwork for Island Sanctuary was created by Quinton Hoover, a prominent early illustrator for the game whose romantic, flowing style became a hallmark of the classic sets. In designing the card, Hoover aimed to evoke a sense of ethereal, protected isolation, capturing the serene and somewhat fragile nature of the sanctuary described in the card's mechanics. While the game's initial reception was humble, the distinct visual identity established by artists like Hoover helped cement Magic: The Gathering as a cultural phenomenon among strategy gaming enthusiasts.
