Where it came from
Island Sanctuary was originally released as an uncommon enchantment in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering expansion Legends. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card introduced a unique defensive mechanic that allowed players to forgo drawing cards in exchange for immunity to non-flying creatures, reflecting a theme of magical isolation and strategic sacrifice.
The Collectors' Edition version was released in 1993 as a non-tournament-legal boxed set aimed at collectors. Featuring the distinct gold-bordered back design that differentiates it from standard play cards, this version was intended to showcase the artwork of Anson Maddocks, whose signature fantasy style defined much of the game's early visual identity.
