Where it came from
Ivory Tower was first introduced in the 1994 Antiquities expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield. The card's mechanics were intended to provide a powerful defensive tool for control decks, rewarding players for maintaining a large hand size by steadily increasing their life total. Its inclusion in The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts set in 2022 served as a nostalgic nod to this early era of the game, reprinting the classic card with a retro-styled frame that mimics the aesthetic of the mid-1990s original.
The illustration for the original printing was created by Quinton Hoover, whose whimsical and ornate art style became a cornerstone of the game's early identity. Hoover’s design for the card focused on the concept of a solitary, elevated sanctuary, emphasizing the defensive nature of the card through its imposing, spindly architecture. The card is widely remembered for its impact on early tournament play, where its ability to rapidly stabilize a player's health made it a staple in competitive formats of the time.
