Jwar Isle Refuge

Jwar Isle Refuge was first printed in the Zendikar expansion in 2009, designed as part of a cycle of uncommon lands intended to provide players with both mana fixing and a small life-gain bonus. The card depicts a serene, elevated sanctuary situated on the floating continent of Jwar Isle, a location central to the plane of Zendikar’s identity as a world of perilous geography and ancient secrets. Its inclusion in the Commander 2011 product series allowed the card to reach a wider audience of multiplayer enthusiasts who appreciated the utility of its enter-the-battlefield life gain in longer games.

The artwork for Jwar Isle Refuge was commissioned from artist Matt Cavotta, who sought to capture the ethereal, vertical nature of the Zendikar landscape. The illustration emphasizes the dizzying heights of the island and its architectural integration with the natural rock formations, reflecting the set's broader theme of exploration and survival. Critics and players generally regarded the refuge cycle as solid, utilitarian pieces for casual and limited play, praised primarily for their reliability in smoothing out mana bases without the prohibitive cost of rarer dual lands.
