Jwar Isle Refuge

Jwar Isle Refuge was released in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar, a block defined by its focus on adventure, exploration, and the precarious landscape of a world shifting under the influence of ancient, imprisoned powers. Designed as part of a cycle of allied-color dual lands, the card functions as a utility land that provides both a small life-gain bonus and the ability to tap for either blue or black mana. Its inclusion in the set was intended to provide accessible mana fixing for players in the limited format, helping to stabilize decks in a fast-paced environment.

The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a celebrated illustrator known for his atmospheric and immersive approach to fantasy landscapes. Briclot’s design aimed to capture the specific aesthetic of Zendikar, emphasizing the surreal, floating terrain of the plane through dramatic lighting and a sense of verticality. The card was well-received by players for its utilitarian design and the evocative visual storytelling that helped define the visual identity of the Zendikar set during its initial run.
