Where it came from
Anje Falkenrath was released in 2019 as part of the Commander 2019 product line, specifically within the 'Madness' deck titled Merciless Rage. The set was designed to explore themes of graveyard recursion and discard-based strategies, fitting within the gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane. As an oversized foil commander card, it served as a display piece for players to utilize during matches, highlighting the character's role as a matriarch of the vampiric Falkenrath lineage.
The character design was created to mechanically support the madness keyword, allowing players to filter through their deck by discarding cards and drawing new ones. The illustration reflects the dark, regal, and predatory nature of the vampires of Innistrad. Upon its debut, the card was received favorably by the Magic: The Gathering community for its efficiency in specific graveyard-centric archetypes, becoming a staple commander for players interested in high-velocity resource management.
