Provenance

Where it came from

Kaervek's Spite was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to reflect the chaotic and destructive nature of the antagonist Kaervek, a central figure in the Mirage block storyline who sought to conquer the continent of Jamuraa through dark magic and betrayal.

The artwork was commissioned from British comic artist Bryan Talbot, known for his work on The Adventures of Luther Arkwright. Talbot's illustration captures the visceral, self-sacrificial nature of the card's effect, depicting a surge of magical ruin. The card remains a notable piece of late-nineties game design, recognized by players for its high-risk, high-reward mechanical profile.
