Provenance

Where it came from

Kird Ape was originally released in the 1993 set Arabian Nights as one of the quintessential green creatures of early Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to reward players for running a deck with both Mountains and Forests, offering an aggressive one-drop creature that punch far above its weight class in combat. Its design remains a classic example of color-pie-bending utility, establishing a long-standing identity for efficient, land-dependent creatures.

The version from the 2011 Duel Decks: Ajani vs. Nicol Bolas features updated card frame technology while retaining the iconic, ferocious illustration style. This specific printing was included to balance the aggressive, nature-focused strategy of the Ajani deck, pitting it against the sophisticated, manipulative tactics of Nicol Bolas. While the card has appeared in numerous sets over the decades, this release served to introduce a newer generation of players to a staple that defined early tournament play.
