Provenance

Where it came from

Kird Ape was originally released in the 1993 Arabian Nights expansion, the first set of Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to evoke the flavor of folk tales and high adventure. The creature’s unique mechanic—granting a power and toughness boost when the player controls a Forest—quickly established it as a staple of aggressive red decks. By the time it was reprinted for the Ninth Edition core set in 2005, it had already secured its status as one of the most efficient low-cost threats in the game's history.

The Ninth Edition illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, who provided a fresh take on the classic design for this release. Hudson leaned into the character’s primal, territorial nature, moving away from the more whimsical or cartoony interpretations found in previous printings. Her work on this card is recognized for bringing a grounded, visceral sense of scale to the creature, consistent with the aesthetic shift toward more polished, atmospheric fantasy art that defined the mid-2000s era of the game.
