Provenance

Where it came from

Kird Ape was originally introduced in the Arabian Nights expansion in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to highlight the efficiency of green creatures when paired with specific land types. The card quickly became a staple in tournament play, defining the 'Zoo' archetype by rewarding players for incorporating Mountains alongside Forests to boost the creature's power and toughness early in a match.

The Ninth Edition printing, released in 2005, marked a significant aesthetic shift by featuring new artwork by Terese Nielsen. Moving away from the whimsical, folk-art style of the original, Nielsen’s interpretation rendered the ape with a more grounded, visceral intensity. Her work was well-received for its anatomical detail and dynamic lighting, helping to modernize the card's visual identity for a new generation of players.
