Where it came from
Launch the Fleet was originally introduced in the Journey into Nyx set for Magic: The Gathering in 2014, designed to showcase the heroic mechanic. Its inclusion in the Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck reflects its thematic versatility, as it perfectly captures the aesthetic of deploying vast Astra Militarum forces onto the battlefield. The card’s design, characterized by its strive ability, allows players to scale their assault based on available mana, mirroring the relentless tide of Imperial infantry.
The artwork for the Warhammer 40,000 release was handled by artist Games Workshop, moving away from the original Hellenistic-inspired art of the Theros block to align with the grim aesthetic of the 41st millennium. By depicting massed ranks of soldiers rushing forward, the illustration serves both a functional and narrative purpose, emphasizing the sheer scale of warfare typical of the Imperium of Man. It has been well-regarded by Commander players for its ability to generate token armies, particularly in go-wide strategies.
