Provenance

Where it came from

Web was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the inaugural printing of Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game was conceived as a portable, strategic card game that could be played quickly between rounds of other tabletop role-playing games. The Alpha print run consisted of approximately 2.6 million cards, distinguished by their rounded corners and intense color saturation, which laid the foundation for the collectible trading card phenomenon.

The artwork for Web was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prolific artist known for his distinctively romantic and ornate style that defined much of the early game's aesthetic. The card serves as a green-aligned enchantment designed to restrict the movement of creatures with flying, reflecting the game's mechanics of color-coded strengths and weaknesses. Upon release, the set was received with unexpected enthusiasm, quickly evolving from a niche gaming product into a foundational pillar of modern hobby culture.
