Where it came from
Lightning Greaves first debuted in the 2003 Magic: The Gathering set Mirrodin, designed to provide creatures with a lightweight, mana-efficient way to gain haste and shroud. The card quickly became a staple in the Commander format, where the ability to protect key commanders from targeted removal while enabling immediate offensive pressure proved invaluable. Its design, characterized by the mechanical shorthand of 'equip 0', remains one of the most efficient utility pieces in the game's history.
The Commander Anthology Volume II version, featuring collector number 196, was released in 2018 as part of a curated collection intended to provide players with accessible staples and fan-favorite cards from the format's history. This specific printing utilizes updated modern frames and standardized terminology, reflecting the card's enduring presence in the game. It is widely regarded by players as an essential inclusion for decks reliant on commander-centric strategies, valued for its utility and consistent performance across diverse playgroups.
