Llanowar Elves

Llanowar Elves first appeared in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, representing the quintessential mana-producing creature for green decks in Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a fundamental building block of the game's resource system, allowing players to accelerate their mana development during the early turns of play. The Revised Edition, released in 1994, brought the card to a wider audience, serving as the third core set iteration and maintaining the game's early aesthetic standards.

The original illustration by Anson Maddocks captures the classic fantasy archetype of a forest-dwelling elf. Maddocks leaned into a traditional, grounded style that defined the visual language of early Magic, emphasizing the connection between the creature and the wooded realm of Llanowar. The design was received as a functional staple, and because of its consistent inclusion in early core sets, it became one of the most recognizable and widely distributed cards among players who joined the hobby during the mid-nineties.
