Provenance

Where it came from

Lure was originally released in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing one of the fundamental mechanics of the game's early design. As an enchantment that forces all opposing creatures to block the enchanted creature, it was created to provide a strategic pivot point, allowing a player to clear a path for other attackers or to neutralize a stalled board state. Its inclusion in Fourth Edition, released in 1995, marked the card's continuation as a staple of the green color identity during the game's formative years.

The artwork for Lure was commissioned from Quinton Hoover, a renowned illustrator whose lyrical and distinct style defined much of Magic's early aesthetic. Hoover intended to capture the hypnotic and inevitable nature of the card's effect, utilizing flowing lines and a sense of magical enticement. Upon its release, the card was received as a high-impact utility piece that rewarded players for building aggressive, creature-heavy decks, quickly becoming a recognized icon of the game's initial design philosophy.
