Provenance

Where it came from

Lure was introduced as part of the Ice Age expansion set for Magic: The Gathering, released in June 1995. As a green enchantment, the card functions by forcing all of an opponent's creatures to block the enchanted creature, creating a tactical bottleneck that was particularly impactful in the limited formats of the mid-1990s. The set was designed to explore a cold-weather, high-fantasy theme, moving away from the Mediterranean influences of earlier sets to emphasize themes of survival and rugged terrain.

The artwork for this particular printing was created by artist Anson Maddocks. His interpretation features a whimsical yet foreboding depiction of a magical trap, aligning with the card's mechanical utility of drawing creatures into an unavoidable combat encounter. Upon its release, Lure became a staple in green-heavy decks, prized by players for its ability to clear the board of defensive blockers and facilitate decisive attacks, cementing its place as a classic utility card within the early history of the game.
