Mana Short

Mana Short was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a high-stakes instant that functions as a mana-draining mechanism. In the context of the game's early years, it represented a strategic shift in resource management, allowing players to disrupt their opponent's turn by forcing them to use their mana prematurely or lose it entirely. The Fourth Edition printing, released in 1995, utilized the same fundamental game mechanics and served as part of the game's first core set designed to standardize the base experience for a growing international audience.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Jesper Myrfors, the original art director for the game, who utilized a distinct, surreal style that became synonymous with the early visual identity of Magic. Myrfors sought to convey the chaotic, ethereal nature of magical energy being siphoned away, using abstract forms that contrasted with the more literal fantasy art common in tabletop gaming at the time. The Fourth Edition version retained this iconic aesthetic, which remains a focal point for collectors interested in the foundational era of the trading card game.
