Where it came from
Smothering Tithe was introduced in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set Ravnica Allegiance, representing the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild characterized by its hierarchical, church-like structure and predatory financial practices. Mechanically, the card was designed to embody the guild's theme of taxing opponents for their actions, requiring players to pay extra mana or permit the controller to create Treasure tokens. It quickly became a staple in the Commander format due to its ability to scale effectively in multiplayer games.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, depicts an ornate, golden Orzhov construct reminiscent of a cathedral spire or a liturgical censor. Kieryluk aimed to capture the guild's aesthetic of 'gothic luxury,' blending themes of religious iconography with the cold, calculated greed central to the lore of the Ravnica plane. Upon its release, it was lauded by players for its balance of flavor and utility, eventually becoming one of the most widely played white cards in the game's secondary market history.
