Provenance

Where it came from

The Mox Jet was released in 1993 as part of the Collectors' Edition, a boxed set produced by Wizards of the Coast to offer fans a non-tournament-legal version of the rarest cards from the original Limited Edition Alpha and Beta releases. These cards are distinguished by their square corners and a distinct gold-bordered backing, which served to protect the value of the tournament-legal originals while allowing collectors to experience the iconic gameplay mechanics of the early Magic: The Gathering era.

The card’s striking illustration was crafted by Dan Frazier, whose work is synonymous with the Power Nine, the group of artifacts to which the Mox Jet belongs. Frazier’s design aesthetic was instrumental in establishing the high-fantasy, mystical visual language of the game's infancy. Although initially criticized by competitive players for their lack of tournament utility due to the back print, these sets have since become highly sought after for their historical preservation of early card design and their role in the foundational lore of trading card games.
