Where it came from
Originally debuted in the 1996 Ice Age set, Necropotence is one of the most infamous and mechanically influential cards in Magic: The Gathering history. Designed by Richard Garfield to represent the dark pacts of necromancy, it famously fueled the dominant 'Necro' tournament decks of the mid-1990s by allowing players to trade life points for card advantage. Its design remains a benchmark for power-level balancing in competitive play.
The Enchanting Tales version from the 2023 Wilds of Eldraine set features original artwork by Abigail Larson. Commissioned to fit the set's storybook and fairy-tale aesthetic, Larson employed her signature gothic, whimsical illustration style to reinterpret the card's grim theme.
