Provenance

Where it came from

Necropotence originally debuted in the 1996 Ice Age expansion, quickly becoming one of the most infamous and powerful cards in Magic: The Gathering history. Its ability to exchange life totals for card advantage defined the 'Necro' deck archetype, which dominated competitive play for years and necessitated a significant shift in how developers approached card design and power balance.

This version, released in the 2023 Wilds of Eldraine: Enchanting Tales subset, features an updated aesthetic intended to evoke the storybook theme of the Eldraine plane. The illustration, rendered by Greg Staples, shifts away from the original card's grotesque, skeletal imagery toward a more atmospheric, ethereal depiction of a skull surrounded by swirling, dark magical energy, fitting the set's narrative of fairy-tale curses and dark enchantment.
