Where it came from
Necropotence was originally introduced in the 1996 Ice Age expansion, quickly becoming one of the most infamous and powerful cards in the history of Magic: The Gathering. Its design, which allowed players to pay life to draw cards, fundamentally changed the game's balance by enabling massive resource advantage, leading to the creation of the legendary 'Necro' deck archetype that dominated tournament play for years.
This specific iteration, released in the 2016 Eternal Masters set, features new illustrative work by Clint Cearley. While the original card was illustrated by Kev Walker, the Eternal Masters version was designed to celebrate the history of legacy-format staples, providing updated, high-fidelity art while preserving the card's original mechanical functionality for players and collectors seeking a modern aesthetic for their decks.
