Where it came from
Necropotence was originally printed in the Ice Age expansion of 1995, designed by Richard Garfield and illustrated by Sandra Everitt. It emerged during an era where Magic: The Gathering was rapidly evolving its mechanics, becoming one of the most controversial and powerful cards in the game's history due to its ability to exchange life totals for card advantage, effectively breaking the established rules of hand size limitations.
The From the Vault: Exiled version, released in 2009, was a commemorative set designed to showcase cards that had been banned or restricted throughout the game's lifespan. This particular reprint features updated, stylized artwork by Greg Staples, who sought to capture the dark, morbid essence of the card's theme, which resonated with long-time players who remembered the card as a defining pillar of competitive tournament play.
