Where it came from
Nissa, Resurgent Animist was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine: The Aftermath set. This set was designed as an epilogue to the expansive Multiverse-spanning war depicted in the previous set, aiming to highlight the lasting consequences on key characters like Nissa Revane. The card depicts a Nissa who has returned to her roots as an elementalist following her de-sparking, reflecting a shift in her character arc away from the planeswalker designation she held for years.
The card was illustrated by Chris Rahn, who has been a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering for over a decade. Rahn’s artistic approach emphasizes Nissa’s connection to the land and the elemental forces of Zendikar, utilizing a vibrant color palette to contrast with the more somber narrative themes of the set. Upon release, the card received significant attention from competitive players for its utility in green-based decks, establishing itself as a staple card within the set’s limited selection.
