Where it came from
Nissa, Resurgent Animist was released in the 2023 set March of the Machine: The Aftermath, an epilogue expansion designed to illustrate the immediate aftermath of the Phyrexians' failed invasion of the multiverse. The card depicts Nissa Revane in a pivotal moment of her character arc, having recently been compleated and subsequently restored to her original form. As a legendary creature that can transform into a planeswalker, the card serves to represent her renewed connection to the natural forces of the multiverse following the cataclysmic events of the conflict.
The card's art was created by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who has been a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering for years. Her design for this iteration of Nissa emphasizes her regained vitality and affinity for nature, moving away from the metallic, industrial aesthetics of her Phyrexian phase. The card was received by players as a significant mechanical update to the character, often discussed within the community for its ability to filter through decks and generate significant mana advantage in the green-aligned strategies of the Commander format.
