Where it came from
Nissa, Resurgent Animist was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine: The Aftermath set, a micro-expansion designed to provide a narrative epilogue to the conclusion of the Phyrexian invasion storyline. This specific card represents a pivot in the character's journey as she reconciles with her elemental roots following the loss of her planeswalker spark. The design seeks to mechanically reflect her deep connection to the Zendikar mana flows and her ability to summon aid from the natural world.
The artwork for this version was commissioned to emphasize the character’s renewed connection to the elemental forces of her home plane. As a promotional variant, it features distinct framing and foil treatments intended to appeal to collectors focused on high-tier aesthetic representations of major story figures. While the set itself was a departure from traditional expansion structures, the card has been recognized for its utility in green-aligned decks that prioritize creature-based synergy.
