Where it came from
Oath of Nissa was released in 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a pivotal narrative moment where the elf planeswalker Nissa Revane pledges her loyalty to the Gatewatch, a group of heroes dedicated to protecting the multiverse. Mechanically, the card was designed as a low-cost enchantment that provides card selection, reflecting Nissa’s deep connection to the natural forces of the plane of Zendikar.
The artwork was illustrated by Wesley Burt, who aimed to capture the ethereal and verdant aesthetic associated with Nissa’s elemental magic. The piece illustrates the vow taken by the character, emphasizing the theme of interconnectedness that defined the storyline of the block. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency in smoothing out deck consistency, particularly in decks that rely heavily on specific creatures or planeswalkers.
