Where it came from
Obscura Ascendancy was released as part of the promotional suite for the Streets of New Capenna expansion, a Magic: The Gathering set themed around art deco aesthetics and organized crime families. The card features the unique alternate-frame treatment synonymous with the Obscura family, an art-focused, information-gathering syndicate within the metropolis of New Capenna.
The card was illustrated by Justyna Dura, whose work emphasizes the gothic and sharp-edged visual language of the set. By employing a stylized, monochromatic-leaning palette with high-contrast highlights, the design captures the intersection of magical espionage and high-society intrigue that defined the narrative identity of the Obscura faction upon the card's debut.
