Where it came from
Obscura Ascendancy was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the Obscura, one of the five crime families that dominate the Art Deco-inspired metropolis of New Capenna. Mechanically and narratively, the card emphasizes the faction's affinity for strategic manipulation, information gathering, and the use of conniving magic to control the flow of the battlefield.
The card features the distinct visual style of the set, which blends noir aesthetics with high-fantasy opulence. The illustration, created by artist Anna Podedworny, depicts the sharp, sophisticated, and slightly ominous imagery characteristic of the Obscura's architectural and social influence. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a specialized tool for deck archetypes that rely on recurring creature tokens and card filtering, cementing its role as a thematic pillar for fans of the faction.
