Where it came from
Obscura Ascendancy was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set explores the art deco-inspired metropolis of New Capenna, a city controlled by five distinct crime families. This card represents the Obscura, a faction of mages, spies, and information brokers who utilize arcane magic to manipulate public perception and gather intelligence.
The card's artwork, illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan, captures the thematic essence of the Obscura. Tan's design emphasizes the faction's focus on concealment and elevated perspective, reflecting the guild's role as the city's unseen puppet masters. Upon its release, the card became a focal point for players interested in synergistic deck-building, particularly for those exploring the set's unique 'Connive' mechanic which rewards tactical card management.
