Where it came from
The Ornithopter was originally released as part of the Antiquities expansion in 1994, conceptualized to reflect the set's thematic focus on the mechanical artifacts of the Brothers' War. Designed by Amy Weber, the card’s illustration depicts a fragile, insect-like flying machine that draws inspiration from historical sketches of early aviation attempts. Its mechanical design—a zero-cost artifact creature—was intended to provide a low-investment utility piece that could be utilized in various combo-oriented strategies.
By the time it appeared in Fifth Edition in 1997, the Ornithopter had solidified its reputation as a versatile staple in competitive play. Fifth Edition served as a core set designed to consolidate the card pool, and the inclusion of the Ornithopter allowed new players access to a card that had become a linchpin for decks relying on rapid artifact deployment. Its design continues to be praised for its elegant simplicity and its enduring ability to surprise opponents who underestimate its potential for modular interaction.
