Many scholars believe that these creatures were the result of Urza's first attempt at mechanical life, perhaps created in his early days as an apprentice to Tocasia.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Ornithopter, first appearing in the Antiquities expansion, was designed as a zero-cost artifact creature, a rarity for its time. It was created during Magic: The Gathering’s early development phase when designers were exploring artifacts that could provide utility without consuming mana resources. This specific version hails from the Summer Magic set, also known as Edgar, which was a limited production run intended to replace the flawed Revised Edition. Due to a series of errors in the printing process, the set was mostly destroyed, leaving only a tiny fraction of the cards to enter circulation.

The card’s illustration was crafted by Amy Weber, one of the original artists who defined the aesthetic of early Magic. Her design captures the Victorian-inspired, mechanical essence of an early flying machine, aiming for a grounded, invention-focused look that contrasted with the high fantasy art common elsewhere in the game. Upon its re-release in the short-lived Summer Magic run, the card became a significant rarity, highly sought after by collectors not just for its gameplay utility as a cheap sacrificial or equipment-bearing unit, but as a prestigious piece of trading card history.
