Provenance

Where it came from

The Ornithopter card featured in the Secret Lair Drop series, identified by collector number 604, is a specialized iteration of one of Magic: The Gathering's most iconic artifacts. Originally printed in the 1994 Antiquities set, the card represents a mechanical flying machine inspired by Renaissance-era engineering sketches. This particular version was released through the Secret Lair program, a curated collection of cards featuring unique, unconventional, and highly stylized artwork that diverges from standard set releases.

The artistic direction for this drop was designed to emphasize the whimsical, invention-focused nature of the card's lore. By utilizing a bespoke aesthetic, the designers aimed to elevate the Ornithopter from a functional utility card into a collectible art piece that appeals to both veteran players and fans of aesthetic-focused gaming. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the community for its refreshed visual identity, which successfully contextualized the card as a delicate, hand-drawn relic of a bygone era.
