Where it came from
Ovinize was originally released in the 2007 set Planar Chaos, a set built on the premise of a divergent reality where the color pie of Magic: The Gathering was reinterpreted. The card represents the blue color's occasional foray into polymorph-style effects, typically reserved for green or white. The design intentionally evokes the classic 'humble' spell archetype, trading power for a comical, creature-altering transformation.
The Dominaria Remastered version, numbered 291, serves as a retrospective inclusion that gathers iconic cards from the history of the Dominaria plane. The artwork maintains the original illustration by Dan Dos Santos, which captures the whimsical and slightly unsettling nature of the transformation. It is regarded by players as a niche but flavorful utility card that highlights the experimental design philosophy of the Time Spiral block.
