Where it came from
Ovinomancer was originally released in the 1997 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Visions. Designed by Mark Rosewater, the card reflects the whimsical and experimental spirit of early Magic design, utilizing a unique mechanic that allows players to trade land cards for a 0/1 Sheep token. This creature type and its peculiar utility made it a notable curiosity for players who enjoyed unconventional deck-building strategies.
The card was later included in The List, a curated selection of cards from throughout Magic's history that can be found in Set Boosters. The inclusion of Ovinomancer in the Dominaria Remastered era printing (DMR-64) keeps the legacy of the original design alive for modern collectors. It features the iconic, surreal illustration by Anson Maddocks, whose work on the card captures the oddity of a wizard transforming opponents into livestock, a theme that has earned the card a cult following among fans of classic Magic art.
