Where it came from
Ovinomancer was originally released in the 1997 expansion Visions, but this specific iteration appeared in the 2006 Time Spiral set as part of the 'Timeshifted' subset. This subset was designed to celebrate Magic: The Gathering's history by reprinting iconic or mechanically unique cards from the game's past, featuring the original card frame and the nostalgic purple expansion symbol to distinguish them from the rest of the modern-era set.
The card was illustrated by Daren Bader, whose whimsical and slightly surreal aesthetic suited the card's bizarre ability to transform creatures into sheep. As a piece of design, Ovinomancer represents the experimental 'blue-green' color pie shifting found in early Magic sets, where players were encouraged to utilize complex interactions involving bouncing lands to fuel powerful board-control effects.
