Where it came from
Patron of the Nezumi was released in the 2005 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Betrayers of Kamigawa. The card represents a powerful spirit creature within the game's Japanese folklore-inspired setting, functioning as part of a cycle of legendary Patron spirits that interact with specific creature types, in this case, the rat-like Nezumi.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Darrell Riche, who depicted the entity with a dark, menacing aesthetic characteristic of the Kamigawa block. The design focuses on the synergy between the Patron and the Nezumi sub-tribe, emphasizing themes of sacrifice and graveyard recursion. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but flavorful addition to tribal deck strategies, praised for its thematic cohesion with the darker elements of the Kamigawa lore.
