Where it came from
Patron of the Valiant was first released in the 2020 Jumpstart set, a product designed to facilitate a unique, quick-to-play limited format. The card belongs to the 'Counters' theme deck, reflecting a mechanical focus on the +1/+1 counter mechanic that has been a staple of Magic: The Gathering for decades. Its inclusion in this set was intended to provide players with a powerful, repeatable way to bolster their creatures, fitting the high-impact style of play characteristic of the Jumpstart experience.
The artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, an artist known for his detailed, often regal, fantasy character designs. His illustration of the Patron captures a stoic, angelic figure, conveying a sense of protection and strength that aligns with the card's function as a support engine for a board full of creatures. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in decks that utilize counters, quickly becoming a recognized card within the broader ecosystem of casual Commander and limited play.
