Where it came from
Patron of the Orochi was released in 2005 as part of the Betrayers of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card belongs to a cycle of legendary spirits known as the Patrons, which were designed to interact with the set's central snake-themed tribe, the Orochi. Mechanically, it utilizes the 'offering' keyword, allowing players to sacrifice a snake to bring the powerful creature onto the battlefield at a reduced cost and with flash timing.
The artwork was illustrated by Darrell Riche, who captured the towering, serpentine form of the spirit emerging from the forest canopy. The design was intended to evoke the folklore-inspired aesthetic of the Kamigawa plane, drawing heavily on Japanese mythology. Upon release, the card was received as a niche but flavorful addition to green-aligned decks, particularly those focused on ramp strategies and tribal snake synergies.
