Where it came from
Patron of the Nezumi was originally introduced in the 2004 Champions of Kamigawa expansion, drawing inspiration from Japanese mythology and folklore. The card features a powerful Nezumi, or rat-folk, spirit designed to embody the dark, graveyard-focused themes of the set's black-aligned decks. Its ability to punish opponents for each permanent sent to their graveyard reflects the aesthetic of the Kamigawa block, which heavily emphasized spirit-related mechanics and traditional East Asian art styles.
The 2011 Commander release, which features this specific printing as card number 93, reissued the creature to provide a staple high-mana-cost finisher for the then-fledgling Commander format. The artwork, credited to illustrator Kev Walker, utilizes a stark, ominous color palette to emphasize the creature's status as a legendary spirit of the underworld. The design was well-received by players looking for efficient life-drain triggers, cementing its place as a classic piece of utility for tribal rat decks and graveyard-recursion strategies.
