Where it came from
Patron of the Valiant was released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Magic Origins. The card was designed as part of a series of cycle-based creatures meant to represent the growth of planeswalker characters, specifically embodying the theme of white mana and the support of allies. It serves as an uncommon creature that utilizes the 'bolster' mechanic, reflecting the set's focus on tactical cooperation and military-themed combat.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his painterly style and use of soft, ethereal lighting. Voss aimed to depict the creature as a stoic, angelic protector, emphasizing a sense of divine guardianship that fits within the high-fantasy aesthetic of the setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for limited play formats, valued primarily for its ability to strengthen smaller creatures on the battlefield.
