Where it came from
The Phyrexian Germ token was released as part of the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander collection, a series of special promotional cards designed to accompany the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. The card features a distinct art style consistent with the 'Phyrexian' aesthetic, characterized by biological horror and mechanical integration, representing the unsettling creatures summoned by cards such as Batterskull or various living weapon equipment.
The design of this specific token was crafted to evoke the parasitic and invasive nature of the Phyrexian faction within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. By utilizing the visual language of twisting metal and organic decay, the illustrators aimed to create a stark contrast to the scholarly, academic setting of the Strixhaven plane, effectively serving as a thematic reminder of the encroaching threat posed by the Phyrexians to the wider lore.
