Where it came from
Pongify was originally printed in the Commander 2011 expansion as a staple blue removal spell, designed to grant blue mages a way to deal with large creatures at the cost of giving the opponent a 3/3 Ape token. The design reflects the color pie philosophy of blue: providing effective, albeit temporary or trade-off based, solutions to permanent threats. Its inclusion in the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander set serves as a thematic reprint, fitting the set’s chaotic, frontier-inspired aesthetic.
The card’s artwork for the Outlaws of Thunder Junction version was illustrated by Jason Rainville. Rainville aimed to translate the classic, humorous flavor of the card into the gritty, desert-themed context of Thunder Junction. The illustration captures the essence of the spell's effect, depicting a character transformed into a primal ape amidst the rugged landscape, maintaining the long-standing tradition of the card being both a functional utility tool and a lighthearted inclusion in Magic: The Gathering decks.
