Provenance

Where it came from

Pongify was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set explored an alternate-reality theme where iconic mechanics and colors were reimagined, allowing for a flavor-focused removal spell that turns any creature into a 3/3 Ape token. This card introduced a unique gameplay paradigm for blue, which traditionally struggles with creature removal, by trading a powerful threat for a standardized token.

The artwork was created by fantasy illustrator Jeremy Jarvis, who chose a visceral, transformative aesthetic to represent the essence of the spell. His design captures the sudden, chaotic morphing of a target into a primitive primate, leaning into the surrealist tone of the Planar Chaos set. It was well-received by players for its efficiency in Commander and casual formats, cementing its place as a staple of the blue color identity.
