Where it came from
Pongify was originally released as a sorcery in the 2007 Magic: The Gathering set Planar Chaos. It emerged from a period of experimental card design that explored 'what if' scenarios for the game's color pie, specifically shifting blue's typical bounce or counterspell interactions into a transformative removal effect. The card was designed to give blue players a way to handle creatures by turning them into 3/3 Apes, a flavor-forward approach that became a staple in the format.
The card was included in The List, a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern booster packs to celebrate the game's history. The specific version designated OTC-106 features the updated frame and aesthetic consistency of the contemporary era, maintaining the original illustrative intent which emphasized the chaotic and humorous nature of transmogrifying an opponent's high-value creature into a standard green token. It is widely regarded by players as a highly efficient and iconic piece of utility magic.
