Primal Clay

Primal Clay was originally released in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering core set, but the specific version known as Summer Magic—often referred to by collectors as the Edgar set—originated from a botched production run intended to replace the Revised Edition. Due to a distribution error, the vast majority of this print run was ordered to be destroyed, making the few surviving copies exceptionally rare artifacts of the game's early history.

The card features artwork by Dan Frazier, whose illustrations are iconic for defining the visual language of the game's early years. Frazier utilized a distinct, painterly style that emphasized the mythical and malleable nature of the creature, which serves as a versatile utility card that can mimic the form of other creatures on the battlefield. Despite its humble origins as a common, its scarcity in this specific printing has made it a prized possession for historical collectors.
