Where it came from
Stasis was originally released in the 1993 Limited Edition Alpha and Beta sets, the foundational launch of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to mechanically represent the concept of magical inertia, forcing players to skip their untap step as a representation of a frozen battlefield. It emerged from a period of experimental card design where Wizards of the Coast prioritized complex, high-impact enchantments that fundamentally altered the flow of play.
The artwork for the Beta edition was illustrated by Fay Jones. Her piece is notable for its departure from the high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the era, favoring a surreal, stylized representation of figures in a state of suspended motion. While the card was initially received with some confusion due to its unorthodox visual style and its ability to stall game progression indefinitely, it has since become a cult classic among collectors for its unique art and its historical status as one of the most disruptive cards in the game's early years.
