Rampant Growth was first introduced in the Mirage expansion in 1996, designed as a foundational green spell that allowed players to search their library for a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped. This mechanic, known colloquially as ramp, became a staple of the Magic: The Gathering color pie, providing green with a distinct advantage in mana acceleration. The Sixth Edition printing, released in 1999, featured new frame aesthetics and updated rules text to align with the core set's standardized formatting, serving as a reliable utility card for players across multiple formats.

The artwork for this iteration was illustrated by Edward P. Beard Jr., who captured the essence of nature’s rapid expansion through a swirling, mystical depiction of botanical growth. Beard’s illustrative style, characteristic of the late nineties era of the game, leaned into high-fantasy motifs that emphasized the magical infusion of the land. The card was well-received by the player base for its efficiency and simplicity, remaining a perennial inclusion in green decks due to its ability to fix mana bases and advance a player's board state during the early game.
