Rampant Growth was first introduced in the Tempest expansion in 1997, designed as a foundational green sorcery that allows a player to search their library for a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped. The card became a staple of early Magic: The Gathering gameplay, serving as a quintessential example of 'mana ramp'—a strategy focused on accelerating resource acquisition to play more powerful spells earlier in a match.

The Eighth Edition printing, released in 2003, marked a significant milestone for the card as it featured a new look following the game's major aesthetic overhaul. The art by Edward P. Beard Jr. captures the organic, earthy essence of the spell's effect, emphasizing the connection between the caster and the natural world.
