Where it came from
Relentless Assault was originally introduced in the Mercadian Masques expansion in 1999, designed to capture the high-intensity pacing of a creature-focused combat strategy. By the time it was reprinted for the Tenth Edition core set in 2007, it had become a hallmark of red mana cards, valued for its ability to grant an additional combat phase and untap creatures, effectively turning a stalemate into a decisive offensive push.
The art for the Tenth Edition printing features illustration by Greg Staples, who rendered the card with a visceral, action-oriented aesthetic that emphasizes the chaotic movement of a second wave of attackers. Within the broader context of the core set, the card was included to ensure that players had access to classic tactical utility, serving as a reliable staple for aggressive deck archetypes that rely on explosive, turn-altering maneuvers.
